Welcome back to school! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and is ready for a great 2010-2011 school year. The faculty and staff and I are looking forward to working with you this year. We will continue to provide an exciting and rewarding educational program for each and every child at Hazel Park- Hilda Knoff. We want to extend a very warm welcome to our new students and families.
In order to get our year off to a smooth start, we are sending home several important papers. Please read and discuss these with your child, sign the forms, and return them to your child’s homeroom teacher. Your signature denotes that you and your child are responsible for all rules and regulations. The student handbook, with additional information and policies, will be sent home with all students in grades K-2. In grades 3-5 the handbook is included as part of the “Student Agenda.” This assignment book, which was listed on the school supply list, should be purchased from the homeroom teacher for $3.00.
Attendance at school is vital to a child’s academic success. Children may arrive on campus no earlier than 8:10am and must be in classrooms at 8:40 to avoid being marked tardy. The school is required to notify the Truancy and Assessment Center, a division of Juvenile Court, when a student has excessive absences or tardies. Please refer to the handbook for specific information. Dismissal is at 3:30pm. If you pick your child up from school, we highly recommend registering your child in our childcare program. Your child can then be sent as a “drop-in” in the event of an emergency where you cannot pick up your child on time.
Parents who bring students to and from school are required to follow all safety and traffic regulations. We have a horseshoe driveway that runs from the Hilda Knoff Building around to the back entrance of Hazel Park and then back out onto Crochet St. This driveway is ONE WAY with NO PASSING and has a speed limit of 5MPH. There will be teachers directing you as to where to drop the students off and pick them up. With your cooperation this is an efficient, safe, and convenient system. Please bear with us for a few days while we iron out any initial problems. Only walkers will be allowed to enter through the gate on Rensu St. No cars will be allowed into the traffic horseshoe in front of the school from 8:05-8:40 and from 3:10-4:00pm. Busses have priority during that time.
There are specific procedures for paying for lunch, with no charges allowed. Breakfast is served daily at 8:10. Breakfast is $1.00 for students with an extra milk costing 50 cents. Lunch is $1.50 for students. All students are required to wear uniforms each day with the exception of days designated by the school. Please see the uniform policy in the handbook or agenda.
Monthly newsletters will be sent home with your child. Please post these in a highly visible place as a reminder of upcoming events for the month. Sometimes things are sent home requiring a parental signature. Failure to return school documents requiring a parental signature will result in a detention.
We are dedicated to providing a quality educational program in a safe, nurturing environment. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Together we can make this a very successful year. I look forward to seeing you at our PTO Meeting and Open House on Thursday, August 26 at 6:30pm.
